CITY HALL SUITE 400
117 W. DUVAL STREET JACKSONVILLE, FL 32202 |
Dear citizens,
I'm sure that almost everyone has heard about Y2K, computer shorthand for the Year 2000. Y2K issues include software that will not recognize dates expressed with two-digit years, embedded chips that may malfunction, and internal system clocks that could complicate our use of technology. The City of Jacksonville has undertaken measures to ensure that we do not experience a significant Year 2000 problem.
Since July of 1997, the City of Jacksonville has had a dedicated team addressing the Y2K situation, expending more than 40,000 staff hours in testing, remediation and planning. The City has assessed and inventoried its equipment for embedded chips or microprocessors and has contacted all suppliers of such equipment for Y2K compliance. We have also communicated with more than 24,000 vendors, suppliers and other entities with whom the City does business in order to learn what systems are Y2K compliant or what modification will be required in order for all essential systems to be compliant. We have met all of the goals that we have set and remediated our internal systems. We are determined to face this situation with a minimum of disruption and with continued vigilance in order to avoid system failures.
The City is taking all prudent measures to ensure that any disruptions, if they do occur, are not significant. We have contacted our local independent authorities, such as JEA and the Jacksonville Port Authority, concerning the provision of their services, i.e. electricity, water, airport services, etc. We do not believe that there will be significant disruption of such services. Additionally, we believe that municipal services will not be affected by a Year 2000 problem resulting from the equipment or software under our control. However, we cannot guarantee that municipal systems will not be affected in some degree. As a precautionary measure, The City of Jacksonville's Emergency Operations Center will be staffed as we enter the New Year. Residents who would like to prepare for Y2K are encouraged to keep hurricane supplies on hand after hurricane season ends November 30. Bottled water, canned goods, batteries, flashlights, extra cash and a full tank of gas are all supplies that should help you through any crisis, be it a storm or a power outage.
The City of Jacksonville will continue to update the information as we approach the new millennium. As a City, we will work together to celebrate a happy and safe New Year.
Sincerely,
